Endodontics is a branch of dentistry that deals with the treatment of the soft tissue inside the tooth, known as the pulp, which contains blood vessels, nerve endings, and connective tissue cells responsible for the tooth’s nourishment and sensitivity. It is also known as root canal treatment. Endodontic treatments are performed when the dental pulp becomes affected by decay, infection, inflammation, or trauma such as cracking or fracturing of the tooth. The primary objective of endodontics is to treat and preserve the infected tooth or nerve, thus maintaining its health and functionality.
Root canal treatment is necessary when the root of the tooth becomes inflamed due to decay or trauma, but the tooth is still alive.
Endodontic treatment, or root canal treatment, involves the removal of the infected or inflamed pulp tissue and the cleaning, shaping, and filling of the root canal space with biocompatible filling materials. This entire process is referred to as root canal treatment.
The duration of endodontic treatment depends on factors such as the number of root canals in the tooth, the location of the tooth, and the severity of the infection. If there is no infection or cyst formation in the pulp, the treatment can be completed in a single session. However, if the tooth is infected, the treatment may require two sessions.
